I think a few things need to be cleared up.

First 1 KBps = 8 kbps
i.e. 1 kilobytes per second = 8 kilobits per second (notice the captial 'B' and the small 'b')

Unfortunately all advertisements are done in kilobits.

The 144 kbps advertised for r-connect is actually 18 KBps not 130 kBps as stated by 'shreyasvista'.
Also 'suvi', you may get 30 kbps in dial-up. But most software are designed for Kbps not kbps. So your actual top speed is 4 Kbps.

Please do not state that you get speeds more than that because that is very much possible as most modern modems automatically compress data but they show uncompressed data rates.
