You are actually using a 256 KBps connection.
I have been using internet for a long time and let me tell you, at one time I would have killed to get 7 KBps.
My home connection is an airtel card and I am in a non-edge zone, so I only get speeds of 5 KBps or in your terms 40 kbps. I am still able to browse comfortably and I download an average of 350 MB per day.
