Today i saw ads in newspaper about BSNL Wimax in gujarat.Atleast we have got in Vadodara.Prices are bit high

what does 256 kbps-8mbps exactly mean?

Public sector telecom giant Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has joined hands with Motorola to create WiMax infrastructure in Ahmedabad for urban applications.
BSNL has plans to cover entire Ahmedabad city under WiMax technology to provide hi-speed wireless connectivity to the citizens of Ahmedabad. As a first step in this direction, the public sector telecom behemoth has brought in Motorola to set up WiMax infrastructure for city.
Speaking to Express News Service, sources in BSNL Gujarat Circle informed that this first time in Gujarat that such a project has been kicked off and BSNL and Motorola have already set up one tower at Navrangpura area in Ahmedabad. "At present, testing is going on and after testing is completed entire city will be covered under WiMax technology."
Currently, similar towers are being set up at Bangalore, where technology partner has suggested some modifications. After incorporating these modifications tower testing in Ahmedabad will be completed.
Details pertaining to the number of towers to be set up in Ahmedabad and other aspects will be worked out after the testing is completed. The basic idea of the project is to make hi-speed wireless connectivity to users in the city, sources added.
Ahmedabad WiMax Project is part of the WiMax pilot project, for which around 10 cities across the country have been identified, which include Ahmedabad, Banglore, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Hyderabad, Hisar, Pinjore, Rohtak and Panipat.
When contacted, Satya Pal, Chief General Manager, Gujarat Circle, BSNL, refused to divulge details about the project and said that currently the negotiation was going on at the Centre level. Informing that the project would enable the people of Ahmedabad to avail hi-speed wireless connectivity, he also stated that though Ahmedabad has been identified for the project, BSNL wants to cover the entire Gujarat under WiMax infrastructure.

Yes thats good news but hope that prices arent high as they are now.And hope they provide good customer support(they dont in bsnl broadband).And soon many co. will come forward with this ideas as reliance has started mobile internet surfing upto 145 kbps on move at reasonable rates.

But can anyone tell me what does 256kbps-8 mbps mean(this is one of the speeds BSNL is offering).Does that mean wimax speed can vary between this range?

I have a 256kbps unlimited connection from BSNL. From its dataone site tariff you will find they do provide for LIMITED plans(where there is cap on the download/upload) they provide a bandwidth (wherever technically feasible)
256 Kbps/ upto 2 Mbps. So the speed will vary between those speeds, and this does not affect bsnl because this type of system is for limited plans where incase the user goes over the cap limit, he will be charged so in a way its in the interest of bsnl if the speed is increased lets say when the traffic is less which in effect will load the pages at the customer end faster and the customer may be tempted to open more pages thus generate more revenue for bsnl if the customer goes over the limit.
