Default edge technology ?

edge seems to be very cheap now a days .. is it not ? but using the mobile as a modem .. is it a good suggestion ?? or any tweaks or tricks for improving the speed obtained.. though a lot depends on the speed and technology on which the phone runs !!! but still we could use it for downloading , couldnt we ?

Yash I think you are still not aware of present trends in India. I have EDGE enabled mobile phone and whenever I am in hutch network or Idea network a small "e" appears on my signal bars which signifies that I am in EDGE network. EDGE does have better speed, but its not that great as it still not comparable to speeds it provides outside in world.

Alright.. here is an eyeopener for everyone:

Airtel throttles their edge network speeds at 100kbps so whatever you use or try the max speed is bottlenecked at airtel's end at 100kbps for a gprs connection be it edge enabled or not.
Yes edge enabled gprs connections are a tiny bit better but no where near the umts connections available in UK which I have been using for the last year and a half and I get speeds of 256kbps+ all the time..

UMTS means 3G. There is no 3G here. EDGE is basically a 2.75G service which can provide 3G like services on 2.G networks like here in India

3G in India? That is probably going to happen in a few more years. Probably another 15 years or so.

I did not know there was anything called 2.75G. As far as I am aware, edge is 2.5G.

Also edge is available in all the big cities by almost all major players.
