Default 75 year old woman, has Worlds fastest home Broadband connection at 40Gbps

A 75 year old woman from Karlstad in central Sweden has been thrust into the IT history books - with the world’s fastest internet connection.

Very Interesting

Sigbritt Löthberg’s home has been supplied with a blistering 40 Gigabits per second connection , many thousands of times faster than the average residential link and the first time ever that a home user has experienced such a high speed.

But Sigbritt, who had never had a computer until now, is no ordinary 75 year old. She is the mother of Swedish internet legend Peter Löthberg who, along with Karlstad Stadsnät, the local council’s network arm, has arranged the connection.

“This is more than just a demonstration,” said network boss Hafsteinn Jonsson.

“As a network owner we’re trying to persuade internet operators to invest in faster connections. And Peter Löthberg wanted to show how you can build a low price, high capacity line over long distances,” he told The Local.

Sigbritt will now be able to enjoy 1,500 high definition HDTV channels simultaneously. Or, if there is nothing worth watching there, she will be able to download a full high definition DVD in just two seconds.

No data Loss

The secret behind Sigbritt’s ultra-fast connection is a new modulation technique which allows data to be transferred directly between two routers up to 2,000 kilometres apart, with no intermediary transponders.

According to Karlstad Stadsnät the distance is, in theory, unlimited - there is no data loss as long as the fibre is in place.

“I want to show that there are other methods than the old fashioned ways such as copper wires and radio, which lack the possibilities that fibre has,” said Peter Löthberg, who now works at Cisco.

Cisco contributed to the project but the point, said Hafsteinn Jonsson, is that fibre technology makes such high speed connections technically and commercially viable
.
Windows woes

“The most difficult part of the whole project was installing Windows on Sigbritt’s PC,” said Jonsson.

Lets keep hoping that we approach speeds similar to these sometime soon. Unfortunately I doubt that will happen anytime soon. The indian govt. has said that anything above 256 kbps is broadband, so definately ISP's are not going to aim for anything above that.
In fact the fastest available, non-comercial line in India is 8 mbps. That is like a factor of 5000 less than this lady's connection.
Of course, we should'nt be comparing to this connection. We should be aiming for the world average of developed countries i.e. 54 mbps. The indian average of 512 kbps is still a factor of 100 less than that.
We have wrong goals right now, we should'nt be making universal broadband the first priority, they need basic amneties first. We should be making the defination of broadband atleast 2 mbps else it is not much better than dial-up. Broadband is being advertised as an enabler of video-conferencing, live streaming media, fast downloads etc, but at 256 kbps we get only a limited axperience.
We vote with our money. Lets let the ISP's know that we demand REAL broadband, not this mockery they are straddling us with.

I don't think the actual Indian average is any where near 512kbps. It ks definitely way below that. Probably some where near 25kbps or some thing,

Over here I am talking about advertised speeds or kilobits per second. Therefore that 512 translates to 64 kilobytes per second.

I am just amazed what does she used it for !
Our office have three 8 GB connections but that for smooth conferencing solutions through our Gomeetnow software with clients.
hazephase check it out for one more ..

Exclamation

This is real fast.We expect even more surprising results with Optical fiber technology. In these there is almost negligible data loss. The optical fiber is made of a material which has higher refractive index than its coating. This makes it a medium in which, if any radiation enters,it reaches the other end without any absorption. What is this phenomenon called?
