MTNL and BSNL, can we really not live with just one (and better) of them around?
Hi Guys, I am a new member and this my first post. Please correct if I happen to not follow the rules exactly as intended.
The question I have been asking myself is about the future of MTNL. As a person who has tried a number of service providers in both cellular and broadband I feel I have finally hit rock bottom. Currently I am using MTNL service on My nokia E71, which is a 3G compatible phone. I chose MTNL only because it was only operator in Delhi who could claim to offer 3G (think stupid govt.).
How depressed I am! They are hopeless. And all I can do in order to calm down is to reflect, " Oh that is a sarkari company, what else did I expect?"
On the other hand I have worked in several parts of India and what I have heard about BSNL's services is certainly much more encouraging than what I experienced with MTNL (I bet MTNL's entire helpdesk has not cleared even the 8th standard in school). And for quite sometime now I have been reading tempting news of BSNL launching next generation technologies every other day. I desperately want to avail of those services but unfortunately our government has this idea that while one sarkari telco can serve the entire nation it is not capable of serving two cities. Why this absurdity if not for the desire of MTNL workers to keep doing whatever they want without responsibility? Wouldn't a merger create synergies and enable them perform in a more consistent manner? Don't people of Delhi and Mumbai deserve seemless connection with BSNL network and their initiatives (afterall Delhi and Mumbai taxpayers are also funding BSNL)?
I would like to know if experienced members have heard of govt. plans to move in that direction? It may be a forum for day to day issues only (I am not really aware at this point) but I am assuming there must be some guys who sympathize with this view of mine. If there are enough people in public who would rather see a single countrywide and more efficient sarkari service provider than a big elephant(white?) and a smaller plastic-made one(which costs you dearly but you can't even ride, forget about the cost) then the next question is: would educated public contemplate on possibility of lobbying for a merger(or any other better alternative)? Would it be feasible to run a signature campaign or a web-based poll? Are we skeptics enough to think this can never happen?
I think such an impossible thing would be a sale of both companies. But please share your vision. Thanks for enduring such a long msg.
