Satellite connections are not necessarily independent of landlines. Satellites have very huge latencies due to their nature. In an effort to counter this, and also to avoid a part of the huge costs of sending data through satellite connections, V-sat terminals are often combined with telephone lines. Send requests through the "slow but low latency" telephone and recieve data through the "fast but large latency" V-sat.
