I actually dont know much about it. But my Dad works in SBI and is currently posted somewher remote in Uttrakhand state. They have CBS branch and since there is not even a landlinein that village so getting DSL is difficult there. So SBI got themselves a V-Sat connection which is a sattelite based conection. You must have seen a lot of dish antennae on top of ATM booths. they are all Sat antennae.

Satellite connections are different from the ones that you get on your mobile phone, currently Airtel and a few more ISP’s provide these connections. These are mostly used in remote parts of the country, heck in the town of Lukung (32kms before Pangong Tso in Ladakh), there are no telephones but there is an internet café thanks to satellite internet connection.
