Hey,
I am thinking of spending a few months in india. I have a number of programming jobs to do, but I dont need to be in the office. I live in the UK and was wondering what the state of connectivity is in India. Ideally a 2g wireless modem deal would be the best bet I think. What do people recommend? Is it possible to pay as you go? What kind of coverage does it have. The data rates dont need to be huge as the most I will be doing is uploading less than 1mb per day I reckon. Just need to be able to access emails and servers on the go. Hope someone can give me some advice. Thanks S. |

A reliance data card or wireless cdma usb modem from reliance will do the trick for you.
It really depends where in India you plan to go. I have been travelling a lot myself and over the years have found my reliance data card to be the most reliable and fastest (amongst the ones which are available in India) wireless connection. The speed wont be great as the max you would ever get with a reliance data card is 10-12kB/sec KB not kbps and this is the fastest wireless connection you get in India which works across India with no roaming charges... I dont think they have got a pay as you go option so you would need to get in someone else's name who lives in India as they wont sell a connection to forigners. I guess the best thing for you to do would be ask friends or family here in India if someone can spare their data card or usb modem for the time you are here. Airtel is another option but their gprs with edge technology only works in metro areas and some other large towns and once you travel out of those edge enabled areas your connection speed dips like anything and you would find it hard to load even the google home page which is one of the smallest pages I have seen. Another option is tata indicom but after using it for 3 months I disconnected it and the main reason was I was not even able to browse normal web pages or check my e-mails due to slow connection. I have also used vodafone data card (previously hutch) and its the same problem as with airtel although I found airtels network far better then vodafone everywhere Ive been. These days I have a reliance data card and an mtnl connection in my nokia e71 with gprs enabled for emergencies and as mtnl had edge here at Delhi the speed is ok for checking mails and browsing and even uploading small files if need be.Do give me a shout if you want to find out about th price of them data cards and usb modems and also price plans for data usage ![]() |
